Indiana Michigan Power’s Cook Nuclear Plant Unit 2 has been taken offline for a repair. Cook plant spokesperson Bill Downey tells WSJM News staff shut down the reactor Tuesday night.
“Just before midnight some workers in the field saw a steam leak on a high-pressure line that feeds our low-pressure turbine, and as it was being monitored, they noticed the leak seemed to be getting larger so the operators made the conservative decision to shut the unit down manually so that we could take a look and investigate and see what we need to do to make that repair,” Downey said.
Downey says the problem is relatively uncomplicated, and the shutdown went smoothly. The public and staff were never in any danger. He says Cook’s Unit 1 is running at full capacity and can cover the electricity needs of the grid. Cook can’t release an estimate for when Unit 2 will be brought back on line for competitive reasons.
