Berrien County is receiving just over $28,000 in a federal grant for public safety. Congressman Fred Upton says the money is through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program and he’s also announcing nearly $87,500 for the city of Kalamazoo. The U.S. Department of Justice administers the program and says the funded programs or initiatives may include multijurisdictional drug and gang task forces, crime prevention and domestic violence programs, courts, corrections, treatment, justice information sharing initiatives, or other programs aimed at reducing crime and/or enhancing safety. The program is named for a New York City police officer ambushed and killed in 1988 at the age of 22.
