Advisory Council Chair Talks Return To School Plan

Governor Gretchen Whitmer this week unveiled a plan to reopen K-12 schools this fall with extra safety precautions. Tonya Allen is the chair of the COVID-19 Return to Learn Advisory Council. She says students in grade six through twelve will have to wear face masks at all times, while younger students will not be wearing face masks in the classroom.

“That rationale is really because what we’ve learned from the experts is that the face coverings are important, but so is cohorting,” Allen told Michigan News Network. “We need to really understand and trace people where they are. In the sixth through twelfth grade, it’s a lot more difficult to do that cohorting than it is in an elementary school.”

The plan calls for online instruction when a region is designated Phase 3 or lower. It calls for for in-person learning in phases 4 and 5.
