South Haven Getting Federal Grant For Kids Corner Overhaul

Following a slew of grants announced last week by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Trust Fund comes word that South Haven will receive $275,000 from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund in a development grant for Kids Corner. The money is coming from the National Park Service. The city will match the grant, with the intent to replace the existing wooden play structure with one made from composite material, which is more sustainable. The Parks Commission and city staff will collaborate on a final design, with a goal of staying as true to the original design from 1988 as possible. The city sought the grant after an inspection by the DNR, Abonmarche, and Leathers & Associates determined the current structure is both functionally obsolete and no longer conforms to National Safety Standards.
