Congressman Fred Upton is calling on Canada to pick a site away from the Great Lakes for the storage of spent nuclear fuel. Upton tells WSJM News Canada is in the process of choosing a site for the long term storage of that spent material. One of the locations under consideration is along the shore of Lake Huron. It’s the area of Huron-Kinloss-South Bruce, in Bruce County, Ontario. Upton says he and other concerned members of the House have reached out to the Canadian government.
“A number of us this last week, bipartisan and I helped lead the effort, in a letter to Prime Minister Trudeau, urging him in the strongest terms that this is not acceptable,” Upton said. “I know that other colleagues, particularly those of us that serve in the bipartisan Great Lakes Caucus, want to join again in yet another letter to make that point known.”
Senator Debbie Stabenow has also said she will contact the Canadian government over the matter. Canada has narrowed down its list of repository sites to two. The other one is Ignace, in northwest Ontario about 150 miles north of Lake Superior. As of last Tuesday, Upton said he and the other members of the House delegation had not received a response to their letter.
