West Michigan Lawmaker Hopeful Teen Vaping Ban Is Successful

As a new school year begins, concerns remain about the use of electronic cigarettes by minors. It’s now illegal in Michigan, but it’s only been like that for a short time since a bill from state Representative Thomas Albert of Lowell was signed by Governor Whitmer.

“We were allowing minors to possess and buy vaping products, and that’s insanity,” says the Republican lawmaker. “So I’m glad for at least this school year and going forward we’re sending the message to kids that you can’t have these.”

Albert says plenty of school administrators came forward with problems they’ve seen, and he says several vaping-related illnesses being tracked by the state underscores the importance of the new law. He believes electronic cigarettes are dangerous for everyone, regardless of age.

“These vaping products are like the wild west. Nobody knows what’s in them. They’re not regulated, the ingredients aren’t submitted to the FDA, there’s thousands of different types of flavors and products.”

The governor signed the new law in June.
