A 22-year-old Benton Harbor man is hospitalized following a chase with police on Friday night. The chase ended in a crash on Colfax near Messner around 8:40 p.m.
Michigan State Police issued the following statement about the incident:
“While on patrol in the city of Benton Harbor, troopers observed a vehicle without a license plate traveling at a high rate of speed. The troopers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle however the suspect vehicle attempted to elude the troopers by speeding away. A pursuit was initiated which eventually headed S/B on Colfax into Benton Township. During the pursuit, the suspect vehicle lost control south of Elmside Rd., crossed the center lane, and struck a utility pole. The suspect vehicle continued to roll ejecting the driver, who was the only occupant. The suspect driver was taken to Lakeland hospital in St. Joseph and then transferred by helicopter to Butterworth hospital in Grand Rapids due to serious injuries received in the crash. The crash remains under investigation and it is unknown if alcohol was a factor in the crash.”
