An open house regarding the Palisades nuclear power plant in Van Buren County is planned for next week. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s Viktoria Mitlyng tells WSJM News the agency’s own inspectors, including those who work full-time on site at Palisades, will be there to talk about the plant’s safety record in 2018.
“We can talk about the range of inspections that were conducted last year,” Mitlyng said. “Every quarter, there are inspections reports that are issued by our inspectors.”
While Palisades is listed as having operated safely in 2018, Mitlyng says the open house can provide more information. She says the public can also ask about the upcoming decommissioning of the facility in 2022.
“I hop’e to have local residents, people from the community, come out and talk to us and have questions and have a conversation about how this plant is doing.”
Mitlyng says there is an open house for the Palisades plant each year. One is also being planned for the Cook plant in Berrien County, but its date has not yet been announced. The Palisades open house will be held at the Covert Township Lions Community Center on County Road 378 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. next Thursday.
