The new home for Berrien County Animal Control is ready, and by the end of next week, the agency could be all moved in. Animal Control Director Val Grimes says the new 12,500 square foot facility In Benton Township is a vast improvement over the old one in Berrien Springs, allowing more space for the staff and the animals. She says, next week, the old shelter will be open so people can come claim lost dogs and cats, but that’s about it.
“We want to definitely be open at least to noon on Monday, and probably most of the day, somebody will be here so if anybody has any dogs or any animals that they want to redeem or reclaim that they lost over the weekend, they can get them on Monday,” Grime told WSJM.
Grimes says the big move day, when they have to relocate about 45 dogs and 60 cats, will be next Tuesday. The new animal control shelter, which is right behind the Berrien County Health Department on Euclid Avenue, will be open and fully operational starting on June 20. The old building will still be used by the county for other purposes once it gets a renovation.
