MI Supreme Court Rejects Same-Sex Benefits


The Michigan Supreme Court has ruled that the state's 2004 constitutional amendment banning gay marriage also prohibits same-sex benefits among public employees. The court was considering a challenge to university healthcare policies that allowed some same-sex partners of employees to receive benefits. However, ACLU of Michigan Executive Director Kary Moss says that the ruling goes far beyond that:

She added that the amendment's intent was to ban gay marriage, not benefits between gay partners. Up to 20 public universities, school districts and local governments in Michigan have benefits policies covering gay couples.
