Michigan's economy claims another victim with a Kalamazoo-based trucking company going out of business. Alvan Motor Freight ended 67-years of operations last week and plans to file for bankruptcy leaving 525 employees without a job. CEO James Vanzoeren says the weak midwestern economy and the 87-day strike at its major customer, American Axle, led to the decision. Vanzoeren also cited increased competition in the trucking industry and high diesel fuel prices as additional factors. Alvan provides next day service in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and Wisconsin.
