Farm bill to aide Michigan agriculture

Michigan U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow says a newly approved federal farm bill will help the state's $60 billion agriculture industry. Stabenow helped negotiate the $290 billion farm proposal the Senate approved Thursday by a wide margin. The bill moves to President Bush and got enough support to overcome a veto threat from the White House. It includes about $4.4 million for Michigan over five years for state programs involving specialty crops such as fruits and vegetables. Nationally, it also includes $230 million for research on specialty crops commonly grown in Michigan, including blueberries, apples, cherries, asparagus, and celery. Stabenow says it also boosts cellulosic ethanol and nutrition programs for students and seniors.
