Benton Harbor Looks to Reduce Meeting Schedule

A first step towards possibly cutting back on the number of regular meetings held by the Benton Harbor City Commission was given approval this week. Currently, the commissioners meet every Monday...but under a proposed amendment to the city charter, that would be reduced to just the first and third Mondays of each month. Commissioner James Hightower says that the change would put Benton Harbor in line with what the vast majority of other city governments in Michigan do, and it would also save over 34-thousand dollars a year. The first step is for the proposal to be sent to the state for approval...and it would then have to clear several steps locally -- including a vote by citizens -- before becoming official.
