Rodney James Hessey, known affectionately as Rod to his friends and family, passed away after a courageous fight on September 23, 2024, in Indianapolis, Indiana, at the age of 68. Born on June 2, 1956, in Niles, Michigan, Rod was a man of integrity, warmth, and a deep love for his family.

Rod graduated from Niles High School in 1975. He dedicated twenty-nine years of his career to Brenner Oil, where he was respected for his work ethic and camaraderie as an oil tanker driver. Rod’s colleagues knew him as a reliable and level-headed individual who brought stability and a sense of humor to every situation.

Outside of work, Rod was a man of diverse interests and passions. He had an enduring love for classical hard rock music, which often served as the soundtrack to his life’s most memorable moments. A collector at heart, Rod took great pride in his firearms collection and was an avid reloader of ammunition. His precision and patience made him an excellent marksman, a skill he showcased during target shooting and deer hunting excursions.

Rod’s collection extended to knives as well, each piece telling a story of craftsmanship and history. He also found solace in the timeless narratives of old westerns, which he enjoyed in the quiet comfort of his home. These simple pleasures were a testament to Rod’s appreciation for the enduring things in life.

Above all, Rod was a family man. He is survived by his loving wife, Stephanie Hessey, and their two sons, Rodney (Alishia VanKirk) Hessey III and Ryan (Jennifer) Hessey. His legacy continues through his siblings, Mary (Jeff) Bowerman, Mike Hessey, and Diane Marcum. Rod’s joy was multiplied by his grandchildren, Everleigh, Braxton, Adalyn, and Brinley Hessey, whose achievements filled him with immense pride and happiness.

Rod’s presence was a source of stability and love for his family. He was a guiding force, always there to listen, advise, and support. His wisdom and calm demeanor were the cornerstones upon which his family could lean during times of uncertainty. The memories created during family gatherings, holidays, and everyday moments will be cherished and remembered with fondness.

Rod’s life was a reflection of his values: love for his family, dedication to his work, and a commitment to living authentically. He will be remembered for his quiet strength, his unwavering support, and his ability to find joy in the simple things. Rod’s influence will continue to be felt by all who knew him, and his memory will be honored as a life well-lived.
