Larry E. Hoover, 88, of St. Joseph, passed away, Wednesday, September 18, 2024 at Woodland Terrace in Bridgman.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held 12:00 P.M. Friday, October 18, 2024 at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph, with Rev. Carl Bassett officiating. Burial will follow at Ruggles Cemetery in Baroda, with Military Rites conducted by the Stevensville American Legion Post #568. Friends may visit with the family from 5:00 until 7:00 Thursday, October 17 and on Friday one hour preceding the service, both at the funeral home. Memorial donations in Larry’s name may be made to Stevensville American Legion Post #568 or the American Legion Riders of Southwest Michigan. Larry was born November 29, 1935 in South Bend, Indiana to Howard & Esther (Collins) Hoover. He graduated from Washington Clay High School, Class of 1953. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corp, proudly serving his country during the Vietnam War era from 1955-1963, earning the rank of sergeant. On August 24, 1957, he married the former Dorothy “Dot” Reed of Benton Harbor. Larry was employed for thirty-two years at Whirlpool Corp. retiring in 1995. Following retirement, he kept busy working at Adent’s Landscape for several years and later at Tara Florist as a delivery driver.

He served at the Stevensville American Legion Post #568 on the Executive Board, the Color Guard and was a member of the American Legion Riders of Southwest Michigan. He was a life member of the Marine Corp. League Wolverine Detachment #722. He was an active participant in Whirlpool Oldtimers and the Whirlpool Management Club, where he served as chairman. Larry was a member of Zion United Church of Christ in St. Joseph where he served as a trustee and on the stewardship committee.

Larry enjoyed a good time and was a gracious host wherever he went. He cherished the time spent golfing, fishing, boating, riding his motorcycle with his family and friends, and dancing with his loving wife Dot. Larry was known for his distinctive laugh & his jokes of all kinds. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Larry is survived by his children-Mike (Pam) Hoover of Stevensville, Sherrie (Mark) Groves of Baroda, Jeff (Tracy) Hoover of Roselle, IL; three grandchildren-Brandon (Kala) Hoover, Ashley (Jason) White & Lauren (Brandon Stensland) Groves; four great-grandchildren-Reese & Hudson White, Brody & Brycen Hoover; his sister Patti (Del) Remmen of Clackamas, OR; sister-in-law Debbie Hoover of Granger, IN; and numerous nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy on March 4, 2019, his granddaughter Kara Beth Hoover in 1992, and his brother Dannie Hoover in 2018.
