Karen L. (Sumner) Burnette, 70, of Watervliet passed away unexpectedly Monday, September 16, 2024 at her residence.
Per her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, September 21 at Revive Church in Coloma, where the family will receive friends beginning one hour prior to the service. Donations in memory of Karen may be made to the church. Karen was born June 19, 1954 in Benton Harbor to Thomas and Shirley (Branch) Sumner. She was a 1972 graduate of Lakeshore High School and worked her way through nursing school while raising two young children. Karen was formerly employed by Watervliet Community Hospital and retired from Borgess Visiting Nurse and Hospice after 27 years of service. She was an avid bowler, with many of those years being at Coloma Lanes. She was also a devoted Cubs fan and enjoyed traveling to Branson, Missouri to see the Texas Tenors, or as she would call them, “The Boys”. Karen loved going to and watching her kids and grandkids events, no matter what they were. Anyone that knew her knew she always had a friendly smile on her face and took the time to stop and chat.
Karen is survived by her son Thomas (Jenni) Kiefer of Watervliet, daughter Sarah (Terry) Saffell of St. Peters, Missouri, and sister Nancy Froberg of Bridgman. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Zachary and Kendal Kiefer, Megan and Jonathan Ohst, Trevor Saffell, Kristina, Chassidy, and Travis Saffell, her best buddy Zeke, a long time friend Frank Hanks, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Karen was preceded in death by her brother-in-law Bill Froberg, and a niece Ruth Froberg.
