NHL – Predators add Stamkos, Marchessault in blockbuster moves; NHL teams drop $1B
The Nashville Predators made a big splash on the opening day of NHL free agency by signing Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Marchessault and Brady Skjei. Marchessault, the 2023 playoff MVP got a five-year deal worth $27.5 million. Stamkos leaves Tampa Bay after 16 seasons that included winning the Stanley Cup twice and making two other trips to the final. He signed for $32 million over four years. Jake Guentzel signed with the Lightning as part of them replacing Stamkos. Teams combined to commit a record $1.12 billion in salaries.

NHL – Blackhawks agree to contracts with Bertuzzi and Teravainen on busy opening day
Tyler Bertuzzi and Teuvo Teravainen agreed to contracts with Chicago on Monday, providing a major offensive lift for the rebuilding Blackhawks on the first day of NHL free agency. Bertuzzi received a $22 million, four-year deal, and Teravainen’s agreement is worth $16.2 million over three seasons. The Blackhawks also reached deals with goaltender Laurent Brossoit, forwards Pat Maroon and Craig Smith, and defensemen Alec Martinez and T.J. Brodie. The team re-signed forward Joey Anderson to a $1.6 million, two-year contract.  The Red Wings, in addition to resigning Patrick Kane on Sunday night also signed, goalies Cam Talbot and Jack Campbell.  Detroit also signed defenseman, Erik Gustafson and William Lagesson, and forward Christian Fischer.

NHL – NHL reinstates Bowman, Quenneville after their role in assault scandal
The NHL has reinstated executives Stan Bowman and Al MacIsaac and coach Joel Quenneville. They are able to seek employment around the league effective immediately. Bowman, MacIsaac and Quenneville were banned from the league in October 2021 for their roles in the Chicago Blackhawks’ mishandling of a video coach sexually assaulting a player in 2010. The NHL in a statement said Bowman, MacIsaac and Quenneville have shown remorse for what happened and gained greater awareness for the responsibilities needed in such situations.

NHL – Utah debuts Oct. 8 against Chicago, same night Panthers raise Stanley Cup banner
The Utah Hockey Club will play its first game Oct. 8 against the Chicago Blackhawks. That same night the Florida Panthers will raise their Stanley Cup banner to the rafters in Sunrise before facing off against the Boston Bruins. The NHL released the list of home openers for each of its 32 teams. The full 1,312-game regular-season schedule is expected later this week.  The Red Wings home opener is Oct. 10 against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

NBA – Klay Thompson is leaving the Warriors and will join the Mavericks, AP sources say
Klay Thompson is moving on from the Golden State Warriors, with the four-time league champion agreeing to join the Western Conference champion Dallas Mavericks and change franchises for the first time in his 13-year NBA career, according to two people with knowledge of the decision. ESPN and The Athletic first reported the multiteam deal, which as currently constructed will be executed as the sign-and-trade of a three-year, $50 million contract involving the Warriors, Mavericks and Charlotte Hornets, according to people who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the agreement has not been publicly announced. Thompson is sixth on the NBA’s all-time 3-pointers made list with 2,481.

NBA – Celtics star Jayson Tatum agrees to 5-year, $314 million supermax extension
Jayson Tatum has agreed to a five-year, $314 million contract extension to remain with the Boston Celtics, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press. The new pact will begin with the 2025-26 season and keep the five-time All-Star in Boston through 2029-30 season, according to the person who spoke on the condition of anonymity because it has not been announced. When completed Tatum’s new, “supermax” contract will become the largest in NBA history, supplanting the one signed last offseason by teammate Jaylen Brown, when he inked a five-year deal that will pay him up to $304 million.

URU 1, USA 0 – US eliminated from Copa America with 1-0 loss to Uruguay, increasing pressure to fire Berhalter
The United States was eliminated from the Copa America with a 1-0 loss to Uruguay on a questionable second-half goal by Mathías Olivera, a defeat that will increase pressure on the U.S. Soccer Federation to remove coach Gregg Berhalter before the 2026 World Cup. Uruguay scored when Nicolas De La Cruz swung a free kick in front of the U.S. goal. Matt Turner parried a header by Ronald Araújo, who outjumped defender Tim Ream, but the rebound went right to Mathias Olivera and he tapped the ball in with his left foot. Olivera appeared to be offside on the initial header.

WNBA – Magic Johnson admires how Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese deal with the hype
Magic Johnson has been impressed by Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese since he first saw them play in college. The Hall of Famer sees a lot of similarities between the focus on the WNBA around the two rookies to the attention on the NBA when he and Larry Bird entered the league 45 years ago. Johnson is aware of the unprecedented record shattering TV ratings their games generated in college and how they are now helping the WNBA in attendance and viewership. Both rookies have had road games moved to bigger arenas and Clark and Indiana are the top draw in attendance. The Fever are averaging over 15,000 fans away from home. The Sky are second at nearly 10,500.

Tennis – Naomi Osaka wins at Wimbledon for the first time in 6 years, Coco Gauff moves on
Naomi Osaka has played a match at Wimbledon for the first time in five years and played at the tournament for the first time in six. The former No. 1-ranked player has won four Grand Slam titles elsewhere but has never been a big fan of grass-court tennis. Osaka moved into the second round at the All England Club by pulling out a 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 victory over Diane Parry. Coco Gauff and Emma Raducanu also won. And so did defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, who said he felt nerves before facing a qualifier at Centre Court. One of the tournament favorites, Aryna Sabalenka, pulled out with a shoulder injury.

IndyCar – Newgarden dreams of trying the double of the Indy 500 and Coca-Cola 600
Back-to-back Indianapolis 500 champion Josef Newgarden has a driving dream he still harbors. Yes, he knows the challenges with schedules and sponsors make it likely impossible to ever achieve. That doesn’t stop Newgarden from not only wanting to drive a stock car someday, he wants to do The Double. Yes, the Indy 500 followed by a quick flight to Charlotte, North Carolina, for the Coca-Cola 600. Kyle Larson was the latest to try in May only to be foiled by weather. That’s not stopping Newgarden from hoping to add his name to the exclusive list of those who’ve tried.

NFL – Former Raiders coach loses bid for state high court reconsideration in NFL lawsuit
Former NFL coach Jon Gruden has lost a bid for three Nevada Supreme Court justices to reconsider whether a lawsuit he filed against the NFL after he resigned from the Las Vegas Raiders in 2021 should be heard in courts or in private arbitration. It wasn’t immediately clear whether Gruden will seek a hearing before the full state high court. Monday’s decision was by three justices who previously heard the case. Attorneys for Gruden, the league and an NFL spokesman didn’t respond to messages. Gruden sought a rehearing after justices split 2-1 in a May ruling that said the league can move the civil case into arbitration that might be overseen by a defendant, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
