Shohei Ohtani hit a leadoff homer and a tiebreaking RBI single, helping the Los Angeles Dodgers top the Chicago White Sox 4-3. Led by Ohtani and Freddie Freeman, the Dodgers won for the seventh time in nine games. The NL West leaders are 50-31 at the midpoint of their schedule. Ohtani drove a hanging curveball from Chris Flexen into the visitor’s bullpen in right-center for his NL-best 24th homer. Matt Chapman’s two-run single highlighted a three-run eighth inning and six San Francisco pitchers combined for a four-hitter as the Giants beat the Chicago Cubs 5-1. NHL – Roenick gets into Hockey Hall of Fame after lengthy wait, Wings Datsyuk in
Jeremy Roenick has been elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame after being eligible for more than a decade. The high-scoring American forward is part of the hall’s class of 2024 along with two-time Stanley Cup-winning Russian winger Pavel Datsyuk of the Detroit Red Wings, Canadian defenseman Shea Weber and two U.S. women’s players: Natalie Darwitz and Krissy Wendell-Pohl. Longtime executives David Poile and Colin Campbell are also being inducted in the builder category.  Roenick’s 1,216 points with Chicago, Phoenix, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and San Jose are fourth most of any U.S.-born player. He has been a candidate since 2012 and passed over each year since. Two-time Detroit Red Wings Stanley Cup-winning winger Pavel Datsyuk was elected in his first year of eligibility.  Datsyuk dazzled as “the Magic Man” throughout a 14-year career with Detroit in which he excelled offensively and defensively and afterward also won Olympic gold with Russia in 2018 when NHL players did not participate.  Datsyuk is the 10th player from the 2002 Detroit Red Wings to be in the Hall of Fame.  Campbell played three seasons with the Red Wings from 1982-85, and was an assistant coach from 1985-90.

NHL –Sharks acquire Jake Walman and a 2nd-round draft pick from the Red Wings
The San Jose Sharks acquired defenseman Jake Walman and a second-round pick from Detroit in exchange for future considerations. San Jose added the 53rd overall pick that was originally held by Tampa Bay and inherited the final two years of Walman’s contract that carry a $3.4 million cap hit each season. The 28-year-old Walman had 12 goals and nine assists in 63 games for Detroit last season with his 21 points ranking fourth among all Red Wings defensemen.  Detroit also traded prospect Andrew Gibson to Nashville in exchange for a 2nd round pick and Jesse Kiiskinin.

NBA – Sarr and Risacher in the mix for the #1 pick, Draft will be special night for France
Alex Sarr was born in France and spent last season playing in Australia. Zaccharie Risacher was born in Spain and is coming off a breakout season in France. The next step in their global basketball journey is the NBA, with one of them potentially heading to Atlanta on Wednesday night as the No. 1 pick in the draft. France could have the No. 1 selection for a second straight season after Victor Wembanyama went to San Antonio last year amid enormous expectations and lived up to the hype in a Rookie of the Year season.

NBA – Josh Giddey embraces fresh start with Bulls after trade
Josh Giddey is looking forward to a fresh start in Chicago. The 6-foot-8 guard from Australia confirms he did not want to come off the bench for Oklahoma City and insists he appreciates Thunder general manager Sam Presti’s honesty leading up to the trade to the Bulls last week for Alex Caruso. Giddey says they “were open and honest with each other.” He says Presti "got me to a great spot.” Giddey is coming off a challenging season in which his numbers dropped and he lost his starting job in the playoffs. He goes from a team that went 57-25 to earn the top seed in the Western Conference and reached the conference semifinals to one that missed the playoffs for the second straight year.

NBA – NBA says teaching basketball to US kids becoming muddled
Victor Wembanyama’s on-court warmup session before games when he played in France would last for about an hour. It consisted of plenty of stretching, lots of passing and dribbling drills, then a little bit of shooting. The basics. The skills. Nothing else. It’s what he was taught, but that’s the not the case everywhere in the world. There are many in the NBA — from Commissioner Adam Silver on down the line — sounding a bit of an alarm about how the development of young players in the U.S. differs from the process in other parts of the world, and how the model that seems to focus more on playing than practicing maybe isn’t the best method.

WNBA – Injuries plague WNBA teams. LA and Atlanta winless with key players sidelined
The injury bug has bitten several WNBA teams this season with both Los Angeles and Atlanta losing key players last week. The Sparks will have to play without prized rookie Cameron Brink for the remainder of the year after she tore the ACL in her left knee. The Dream are going to be missing Rhyne Howard for a bit too after she injured her ankle. Neither team has won a game since those players were sidelined, going winless in a combined six games. Atlanta did get some good news with the return of Jordin Canada, who had been sidelined for the first part of the season with a hand injury. She made her season-debut in a loss to New York last Sunday. The Liberty held on to the top spot in the AP power poll this week.

NCAAFB – NCAA removes cannabis from banned drug list, limits on on-field coaches
The NCAA Division I Council voted Tuesday to remove cannabis products from the banned drug substance list and end limits on how many football staffers can work with players on field. The council said cannabis products don’t provide a competitive advantage and its focus in on the health well-being of student athletes rather than punishment for using cannabis. The additional coaches on field mean teams are no longer limited to just the head coach and 10 assistants working with players at practices and games.
