In what the city of Detroit is calling an effort to fight climate change, Mayor Mike Duggan announced the first solar neighborhoods in the city.

Duggan says federal support has made now the right time to move when it comes to the solar energy project.

In 2022, when President Biden passed the Inflation Reduction Act, it gave us a 30% credit on everything we’re going to build, and all of a sudden, solar became competitive everywhere in America,” Duggan said. “So, we wanted to show the rest of the cities and states, this can be done.”

Duggan says cities like Chicago have built solar fields miles outside of the city, but Detroit is building them right in the community. Residents in the affected neighborhoods will receive $15,000 to $25,000 in community benefits.
