The Berrien County Election Commission has rejected recall petition language filed against three members of the Brandywine Community Schools Board of Education.

The commission this week determined the wording of the petitions was not clear enough to allow a recall effort to move forward.

Retired Brandywine Superintendent John Jarpe submitted the petitions seeking to remove Elaine McKee, Thomas Payne, and Michelanne McCombs from the school board. Jarpe said the three should be removed for voting against a motion to move public comment during board meetings to the start of the agenda from the end in January of 2023. That came amid controversy about school board efforts to block certain books from the district’s libraries.

Jarpe has said he doesn’t plan to file new recall language at this time.
