Berrien County Clerk issues message about election complaints

Berrien County Clerk Sharon Tyler is spreading the word about what someone should do if they have an election complaint.

Tyler tells us her office started getting calls this past weekend from people upset by campaign signs that don’t have the legally required disclaimers about financing. However, the county clerk is not the person to call with those complaints.

People are misled that you just call the county clerk and this is where you filed the complaint, but the filing of that complaint is with the Bureau of Elections,” Tyler said. “So, we put a link on the front of the county’s webpage because some have a hard time locating it.”

Tyler says she’s put up a news release on the clerk’s website to show people where they need to go with disclaimer complaints.

I know a lot of times our sheriff’s department, our county administrator, myself, and local clerks receive those calls, so we just want to make sure that everybody’s aware.”

Complaints regarding alleged ordinance violations regarding the placement of campaign signs can be made to the individual municipalities where the alleged ordinance violation occurred. However, complaints about disclaimers belong with the state Bureau of Elections.

Tyler says it’s no big deal if you do call her with the complaint, but all she can do is refer you to the right bureau.
