The Silver Beach Carousel Society is marking Founders’ Week with special activities all this week.

The group says the fun-filled celebration is intended to commemorate the 1891 founding of Silver Beach Amusement Park, home of the original Silver Beach Carousel. During Founders’ Week, each daily theme pays tribute to the original locals, Louis Wallace and Logan Drake, who founded the amusement park that thrilled generations of visitors until its closing in 1971.

Tuesday will feature Munchkins Day for the kids from noon to 5:00 p.m. They’ll have carousel rides and activities indoors and outdoors. Tokens are half price.

Wednesday will be Emerald City Express Day with the Emerald City Express large miniature train display and memorabilia and free cotton candy.

Thursday will be Defying Gravity Day with the sand-sculpting magic of the Sand Pirate, Janet Schrader, in front of the Shadowland Ballroom. She’ll also share tips for making sandcastles.

Things wrap up Friday with Horse of a Different Color Day, when the carousel will present riders with packs of Skittles candies during surprise rides and a coloring contest.

Silver Beach Carousel Society President Suz Shaon says they always want to honor the organization’s origins, and visitors enjoy viewing the old wool bathing suits and pictures of the earliest attractions from the park. They’ll also have a display with two original carousel horses, one restored and one showing its original carving and jewels.
