UPDATE: Law enforcement report triple stabbing suspect taken into custody

Update to a story WSJM first brought you yesterday, Cass County Sheriff Richard Behnke reports that on Friday, shortly before 11 pm, his office received notification from a resident on Spring Lake Road in Saint Joseph County that the suspect in a triple stabbing, John Coons, was in her driveway.

Deputies from the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, Saint Joseph County Sheriff’s Office, and troopers from the Michigan State Police responded and were able to take Coons into custody after he surrendered peacefully.

Deputies had responded to a home in the 32,000 block of School Street in Silver Creek Township around 10:40 p.m. Thursday night on a report of a stabbing. They arrived to find three victims with multiple stab wounds from one attacker, later identified as Coons.

The victims were a 73-year-old man, a 75-year-old woman, and a 31-year-old man. The two older victims were taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment.

Sheriff Behnke would like to thank the assisting law enforcement agencies as well as the members of the public who provided tips and information that made the resolution of this incident possible.
