Zoos taking steps to keep animals cool this week

There’s a lot being said about how us humans are reacting to the heatwave, but what about animals?

Detroit Zoo director of animal welfare, Dr. Grace Fuller, says they’re taking steps to keep the creatures cool.

They have access to large habitats with shade and places to cool off, Fuller said. “There are pools when it’s appropriate for the species. And then right now we add a lot of extras just to give them opportunities to stay cool. So we’ll add sprinklers or make misters. We’ll make ice treats for the animals.”

Fuller says animals native to hot weather, like the giraffes and zebras, are loving this week’s heatwave. Others might not find it so comfortable.
