Construction began Monday on what will become Michigan State University’s largest research center.

MSU’s $335 million joint medical research center, to be located in Detroit’s New Center area, will be in partnership with Henry Ford Health.

Among the major contributors to the facility is Detroit billionaire developer Dan Gilbert.

The Hudson’s project is a big bet,” Gilbert said at the groundbreaking. “Ford Motors’ investment in rehabilitation of the recently unveiled train station was a big bet. And of course, Henry Ford’s expansion, which will strengthen Detroit’s reputation as an important hub for medical research and healthcare innovation, is a huge bet and one that we are very proud to support, especially because Michigan State University is involved.”

The project is part of a $3 billion overall investment plan for Henry Ford Health’s new Detroit research campus, which will include a state-of-the-art Neurofibromatosis Research Institute named after Gilbert’s late son, Nick. He who died from the rare genetic disorder last year, at the age of 26.
