Tigers 11, Guardians 7 – Andy Ibáñez homers twice, Ryan Vilade gets first MLB hit, RBIs as Tigers beat Guardians
Andy Ibáñez homered his first two times up and drove in four runs and Ryan Vilade got his first major league hit and drove in three runs in his debut for Detroit, leading the Tigers to a 11-7 win over the Cleveland Guardians. Ibáñez homered on the third pitch of the game from Logan Allen and added a three-run shot in the second. Ibáñez hit a double in the eighth inning and finished 4 for 4 with a walk and four runs.  Vilade, who was recalled earlier in the day from Triple-A Toledo, singled home two in the third and another in the seventh. Matt Vierling’s two-run single in the eighth helped Detroit open a four-run lead as the Tigers ended a four-game losing skid.

Rays 5, White Sox 1 – Eflin allows 1 run in 7 innings as Rays beat White Sox 5-1 for 5th consecutive win
Zach Eflin allowed one run and six hits in seven innings as the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Chicago White Sox 5-1 for their fifth consecutive win. Eflin lost the shutout when Paul DeJong homered with two outs in the seventh. The right-hander worked out of a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the fifth by getting a flyball from Gavin Sheets on a 3-0 pitch. Eflin also retired Sheets on a grounder with two on and two outs in the seventh. Randy Arozarena and Isaac Paredes homered for the Rays. The AL-worst White Sox have dropped the first 2 games of the series to fall 20 games below .500.

Cubs 3, Padres 2 – Busch hits game-ending HR, Bellinger goes deep in return as Cubs beat Padres 3-2
Michael Busch led off the ninth inning with a game-ending home run, Cody Bellinger went deep in his return from broken ribs and the Chicago Cubs beat the San Diego Padres 3-2. Bellinger had three hits after missing two weeks. He gave the Cubs a 1-0 lead when he connected leading off the fourth against Randy Vásquez. It stayed that way until the eighth, when the Padres got to Shota Imanaga, who gave up a leadoff single to pinch hitter Luis Arraez before Jurickson Profar chased him with a two-run drive that just cleared the left-field wall. Busch won it in the ninth when he drove the first pitch he saw from Enyel De Los Santos out to right.

MLB – MLB warns teams urging players to withdraw from HS to avoid amateur draft
Major League Baseball has warned its teams against encouraging players to withdraw from high school baseball to avoid the amateur draft and pursue the increased flexibility of international free agency. The memo was sent to front offices Monday by John D’Angelo, Major League Baseball’s vice president of amateur and medical baseball operations. The memo says MLB has learned that clubs have been encouraging players to avoid high school baseball and try to establish residency in a foreign country to they can become eligible for the international talent system. The memo calls the practice “highly inappropriate,” and threatens “significant penalties.”

NBA – Jamal Murray fined $100,000 for tossing objects onto court
Denver Nuggets guard Jamal Murray has been fined $100,000 by the NBA but avoided a suspension for what the league described as “throwing multiple objects in the direction of a game official during live play.” Murray threw a towel and a heat pack onto the court from the bench late in the second quarter of Denver’s 108-80 loss to the Wolves. Minnesota leads the best-of-seven series 2-0 and Games 3 and 4 are in Minneapolis this weekend. The Nuggets were frustrated with the officiating as they allowed the Wolves to take a big lead in the second quarter.

NHL – Blackhawks re-sign forward Lukas Reichel to a 2-year contract
The Chicago Blackhawks have re-signed forward Lukas Reichel to a two-year contract. The team announced the deal. It runs through the 2025-26 season with a $1.2 million cap hit. The Blackhawks were hoping for a breakout performance from Reichel this season, but he struggled with inconsistency for much of the year. Reichel, who turns 22 on May 17, finished with five goals and 11 assists in 65 games. Reichel’s development is an ongoing issue for Chicago as it tries to take its rebuilding project to the next level. The Blackhawks set a franchise record for losses by going 23-53-6 this past season.

NHL – San Jose wins the draft lottery with expectation to select Macklin Celebrini No. 1
The San Jose Sharks won the draft lottery and earned the right to have the No. 1 pick in the NHL draft for the first time in franchise history. And general manager Mike Grier already has an idea of who he’ll be selecting: Boston University center Maclin Celebrini. The 17-year-old Celebrini has ties to the Bay Area and ranked first among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting. The Sharks finished last in the overall standings and retained their position in the lottery. The lottery proved anti-climactic with no changes to the draft order. The Chicago Blackhawks, who selected Connor Bedard with the No. 1 pick last year, retained the No. 2 selection, followed by the Anaheim Ducks.  The Detroit Red Wings will pick No. 15.

WNBA – WNBA to begin full-time charter flights this season, commissioner says
The WNBA plans to commit $50 million over the next two years to provide full-time charter flight service for its teams during the season. Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said in a meeting with sports editors on Tuesday that the league will launch a charter program “as soon as we can get planes in places.” She said it’s projected to cost around $25 million per year for the next two seasons. That means no more long security lines, bodyguards in public spaces, cramped legroom or layovers for the professional athletes who have been lobbying for better travel long before Caitlin Clark’s celebrity brought newfound interest to the league.

WNBA – Sparks move home game against Caitlin Clark and Indiana to downtown LA
Caitlin Clark’s first WNBA game in Los Angeles is being moved to a bigger stage. The Los Angeles Sparks say their home game against Clark and the Indiana Fever on May 24 is being moved from Walter Pyramid on the Long Beach State campus to Crypto.com Arena in downtown Los Angeles. That’s where the Sparks usually play their home games, but they had to move some games because of construction at the arena. The Sparks also are moving their games on May 26 against Dallas and June 5 against Minnesota to Crypto.com Arena.

NCAAWBB – Big Ten women’s schedule brings USC, UCLA to easternmost schools
The 14 current Big Ten teams each will play two women’s basketball conference games on the West Coast in 2024-25 and incoming members Southern California and UCLA each will play two games at the easternmost schools. The Big Ten announced the breakdown of conference opponents for the 18-team league on Tuesday. Game dates will be announced later. Each team will play an 18-game conference schedule, playing one opponent both home and away and facing 16 teams once. Of the single-play opponents, teams will play eight at home and eight on the road. The conference based the double-play games mostly on natural rivalries.

Indy500 – Penske suspends Cindric and 3 others in the wake of a cheating scandal
Roger Penske has suspended the president of Team Penske and three others for two races for their roles in the cheating scandal that has rocked IndyCar. Tim Cindric oversees Team Penske’s operations and is the strategist for Indy 500 defending champion Josef Newgarden. The push-to-pass scandal dates to the season-opener in March, though the illegal software used by three Team Penske cars wasn’t discovered until last month. The suspensions include this week’s road race at Indianapolis and the Indianapolis 500 at the end of the month.
