They’ve been around for years, but the Biden administration is putting more money into an effort to replace lead service lines across Michigan and the United States.

The White House announced Thursday morning it will make available $3 billion in each of the next three years for the work.

White House National Climate Advisor Ali Zaidi says Detroit and Benton Harbor have already made moves to replace the lead service lines.

We’re on our way in places like Detroit and Milwaukee and Chicago, who’ve joined together to join to launch a Great Lakes Lead Pipes Partnership, the first of its kind mayor-led effort to accelerate lead pipe replacement,” Zaidi said.

While the drinking water doesn’t have lead in it, corrosion in the service lines can release lead into the water.’

High lead levels can cause serious health and developmental problems for children and pregnant women.
