Group calls for more state action on environment, housing

A coalition of non-partisan groups in Michigan met this week to urge state lawmakers to include investments in the next budget that would protect natural resources and fight against climate change.

Carlee Knott with the Michigan Environmental Council says these investments should include affordable housing. The group is asking lawmakers to invest $100 million in an affordable housing retrofit fund.

“This would help to ensure that the existing low income housing that we have is of good quality and safe and affordable for people who are living there,” Knott said.

According to Knott, the majority of Michigan homes are aging as they were built before 1970. That’s causing issues for low income homeowners during the climate crisis.
