Berrien County’s Prosecuting Attorney is resigning and stepping down effective June 3. Prosecutor Steve Pierangeli’s term was supposed to end in December and he had been expected to seek reelection, but news that he is stepping down began trickling through the political and law enforcement communities late last week.

So far, Pierangeli hasn’t explained why he is calling it a career as the county’s top law enforcement officer or what he plans to do next.

WSJM has reached out to the prosecutor, but Pierangeli has not responded. His office states he is out of the office until April 29. As we reported Friday, assistant prosecutor, Amy Byrd is running for the post. The last day to file for the office is Tuesday by 4:00 pm.
