A team from Whirlpool and the Michigan Council on Women and Technology will be at the Lake Michigan College Hanson Tech Center Saturday for the second Girls Rock IT event.

Whirlpool IT Director Fallon Nyce tells us they’ll have more than 30 girls between the second and eighth grade there to talk technology. The goal is to inspire the girls to pursue tech careers by having women who work in tech interact with them.

Nyce says less than 30% of technology jobs are held by women.

One barrier is simply maybe not realizing that it’s even an option for them, which is why it’s so important to show these young girls that there are strong women, that there are people who look like them in these kinds of roles,” Nyce said.

Nyce says the girls on hand for Girls Rock IT will work with Whirlpool staff on coding projects.

We will have different sessions where they will be exploring coding through gaming. So there will be different hands-on sessions based on their age groups.”

The girls will be addressed by Whirlpool CIO Dani Brown and Michigan Council on Women and Technology Director of Programming Tammy Doroshewitz.

This is the second Girls Rock IT event to be held by Whirlpool after last year’s went so well.
