Rangers 9, Tigers 7 – Seager’s RBI groundout and Taveras RBI single lead the Rangers over the Tigers 9-7
Leody Taveras scored the go-ahead run on a fielder’s choice in the eighth inning and added an RBI single in the ninth to lead the Texas Rangers to a 9-7 victory over the Detroit Tigers Thursday. Taveras doubled with one out, advanced to third on Marcus Semien’s fielder’s choice grounder and scored on Corey Seager’s grounder to break a 7-all tie. Taveras added an insurance run with a two-out hit in the ninth. Jose Leclerc (1-2) got the win for Texas, which won three out of four games in Detroit. Shelby Miller (3-2) took the loss for the second straight day.

The Miami Marlins’ game at the Chicago Cubs has been postponed because of rain in the forecast. It will be made up as part of a split-doubleheader on Saturday. Chicago was back at home Thursday after a 5-4 trip that included stops at San Diego, Seattle and Arizona. Cody Bellinger homered to lead the Cubs to a 5-3 victory over the Diamondbacks on Wednesday in the rubber game of the three-game set. Miami is looking to dig out of a 4-15 start. Kings 5, Blackhawks 4 – OT – LA Kings rally late, with a 5-4 overtime victory over Chicago
The Los Angeles Kings earned a playoff rematch with Edmonton by jumping into third place in the Pacific Division with a 5-4 overtime victory against the Chicago Blackhawks. The Kings took a two-goal lead into the third period, but promptly blew it when Chicago scored three times in five minutes. But the Kings finally evened it when Viktor Arvidsson scored his second goal of the night with goalie Cam Talbot pulled for an extra attacker. With third place secured by the single point for reaching overtime, Adrian Kempe then won the game with an unassisted goal just six seconds into OT.

NHL – Coyotes officially leaving Arizona for Utah following sale to Utah Jazz owners
The Arizona Coyotes are officially headed to Salt Lake City.  The NHL Board of Governors voted unanimously Thursday to approve a $1.2 billion sale from Alex Meruelo to Utah Jazz owners Ryan and Ashley Smith, clearing the way for the franchise’s move to Utah next season. The deal includes a provision for Arizona to get an expansion team if a new arena is built within the next five years. The deal will be facilitated through the NHL, with $200 million going to league owners as a relocation fee.  Smith will take over the franchise’s hockey operations and Meruelo will maintain his business operations in Arizona in an effort to secure and develop a tract of land for a new arena in north Phoenix.  The as of yet, unnamed team in Utah will be treated as a new franchise, meaning all franchise records will stay with Meruelo and Arizona.

NFL – NFL draft has potential to set a record for offensive players on offense in round 1
The 2024 NFL draft has the potential to set a record for most players on offense selected in the first round. No draft has seen more than 19 players on offense chosen in the first round. That happened three times, most recently in 2009. Many draft experts are predicting more than 20 offensive players will go in the first round and some have up to 25. The AP’s final mock draft had 22 going in the first round, including 10 offensive linemen, six wide receivers, five quarterbacks and one tight end. Only once in the past 57 years have the first seven picks all been offensive players. That happened in 2021.

NFL – Lions not looking for a starter in the NFL draft for a change
The NFL draft is coming to Detroit and for a change, the Lions are coming off a successful season and have appeared to address every need with seemingly sound moves. Detroit has the No. 29 pick overall and if it doesn’t make a move to pick sooner, it will mark the latest the franchise has made a first-round pick. Lions general manager Brad Holmes has led one of the more impressive turnarounds in the league. Holmes took over a laughingstock of a franchise three years ago and turned it into one of the NFL’s best last season.

NFL – Bears are poised to draft Caleb Williams with the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft
The Chicago Bears are poised to select USC quarterback Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft and bank on the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner to stabilize a position that has long haunted the founding NFL franchise. They made their intentions clear when they traded Justin Fields to Pittsburgh last month. And barring a major surprise, commissioner Roger Goodell will call Williams’ name when the pick is made. The bigger mystery is what the Bears will do with their pick at No. 9, whether they go for a receiver or maybe an edge rusher. Chicago’s only other picks are a third-rounder at No. 75 and a fourth-rounder at 122.

NFL – With Anthony Richardson on board, Colts look beyond quarterback in NFL draft
The Indianapolis Colts believe they found their quarterback of the future in last year’s NFL draft. This year they’re hoping to make Anthony Richardson’s supporting cast stronger. The Colts begin draft weekend with one pick in each of the seven rounds, starting with No. 15 overall selection. But it’s unclear which way the Colts are leaning. Indy could give Richardson another offensive threat by taking a receiver or tight end in the first round. Or maybe they’ll opt for a cornerback or pass rusher to improve what appears to be an up-and-coming defense.

NCAA – Proposal assures schools that help NCAA investigations avoid postseason ban
Schools facing NCAA infractions cases could ensure they avoid postseason bans if they show “exemplary cooperation” with investigators under a proposal before the NCAA Division I Council. The NCAA announced Thursday that the Division I board of directors infractions process committee had introduced that proposal to the council. The proposal would define the term “exemplary cooperation” more clearly while establishing its impact on possible penalties. The NCAA said that impact would include removing a postseason ban from the table for the majority of schools found to have demonstrated exemplary cooperation.

NCAA – Unfair labor complaint filed against Notre Dame over athletes
An unfair labor complaint has been filed against the University of Notre Dame for classifying college athletes as “student-athletes.” The complaint was filed Thursday with the National Labor Relations Board by a California-based group calling itself the College Basketball Players Association. It said Notre Dame is engaging in unfair labor practices as defined by the National Labor Relations Act. The complaint is similar to one filed against University of Southern California last May by the NLRB’s Los Angeles office. Notre Dame cited its Statement for Principles for Intercollegiate Athletics in responding to a request for comment on the complaint, saying athletics is “an integrated participant in and contributor to the University’s education mission.”
