Huizenga: effort to unseat Johnson ‘dumb’

Congressman Bill Huizenga doesn’t see much sense behind a growing effort in the U.S. House to unseat House Speaker Mike Johnson.

A handful of far-right Republicans are suggesting Johnson should be replaced for advancing three foreign aid bills this weekend. Huizenga says it’s a bad idea.

It’s dumb,” Huizenga said. “It’s a dumb idea to vacate the chair again, to remove the speaker. It was massively problematic when Kevin McCarthy was removed. It puts us in a weakened position, not a stronger position for both negotiations with the Senate and with the White House, but it also, frankly, I think it weakens our standing internationally, and this just doesn’t make any sense to me.”

Huizenga says under current rules, any one member could force a vote to remove the Speaker.

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has put forth a motion to remove Johnson, but she didn’t do it in a way that would force an immediate vote. Huizenga says as a result, the question is “just kind of hanging out there.”
