Lakeshore student enrollment down this year

Enrollment at Lakeshore Public Schools is down this year, just like it is at schools across Michigan.

At a meeting of the Lakeshore Public Schools Board of Education this week, district CFO Tracy Althouse told trustees enrollment this year is at 2,669 students compared to 2,686 last year.

While you see above that enrollment has slightly decreased, we have outpaced our projections that we have done by Dr. Fred Ignatovich. So again, while you see that trend, we also are typically better than those projections.”

Althouse showed numbers reflecting an enrollment decline trend that’s continued since the 2014/2015 school year, which had 2,799 students at Lakeshore. However, she said the district has budgeted for such losses and programs haven’t been affected.

While the state is decreasing and we’re slightly decreasing, we do see positives. We’re beating the projected amount that we think that will be down. It was very good this year.”

They’re also projecting losses for next year, although Althouse said the district usually beats its projections.

Student enrollment is key to public school districts as their state allocations are based on pupil count.
