Summer program helping incoming LMC students get ready for college transition

The transition from high school to college can be a challenge for many students, and that’s why Lake Michigan College is offering a free summer program to first time enrollees.

Red Hawks Rise coordinator Beth Lehner tells us the Red Hawks Rise Summer Bridge Program is 12 days of time spent on campus learning all about what to expect when classes begin. She says some students just aren’t prepared for college after high school graduation.

The whole setup is different as far as in high school,” Lehner said. “In high school, you’re typically there on campus at the school for six to seven hours a day. The majority of the work is done during school time, whereas in college, you’re only in classes half of the time and the other half is on yourself to independently get the work done.”

Lehner says many also don’t know where to go for help if they fall behind.

Students who enroll in Red Hawks Rise will be versed in several aspects of college life and campus tours will be given. A grant supports the program, which is why it’s free.

All first-time students are invited to take part with sessions in June, July, and August in Benton Harbor and Allegan County. Lehner says the program served 25 students last year and 22 of them enrolled in fall classes at LMC.
