This Saturday will bring an Earth Day celebration at Weko Beach in Bridgman with a chance for everyone to make a difference and learn something.

The Southwest Michigan Planning Commission’s Marcy Hamilton tells us the Bridgman Shoreline Resiliency Committee is inviting everyone to help clean up the beach and hear from a guest speaker. Anne Smith is a coastal project engineer with Abonmarche who address the event.

She’s worked on several projects on Lake Michigan,” Hamilton said. “So, she’s going to come and do a short presentation for us about the coast and how it changes and what communities are doing to preserve the coastline.”

Hamilton says the focus will be erosion prevention.

That’s a big part of it is the erosion when we get these high lake levels and the wave action and the storms and if people put in hard revetments, how that affects other properties. So, it’s just educational events of how we protect our lakeshore, our beaches, and our dunes.”

After the presentation, everyone will pick up trash on the beach. Hamilton says it’s in conjunction with the Alliance for the Great Lakes Adopt a Beach program, which is holding cleanup events all around the lakes Saturday.

The event at Weko Beach will run from 10 a.m. to noon and you can register at GreatLakes.org.
