Hagar Township seeking to prevent erosion at park

The Hagar Township Board of Trustees has taken action to respond to erosion at Hagar Park along Lake Michigan.

Hagar Township Supervisor Izzy DiMaggio tells us trustees this past week approved the purchase of fencing and signs to be put up along a threatened area of the bluff.

We’re going to put up about 400 foot of fencing, both at the top of the bluff and at the bottom of the bluff by the beach,” DiMaggio said. “There’s one particular area where there’s erosion. We’re going to put about six signs up, and the signs are basically going to say, ‘Please stay out of the fencing area due to causing further erosion.'”

DiMaggio says some of the erosion the township has seen in recent years is concerning.

In one section, we’ve lost trees, so it’s a serious problem in one section, probably about 30 yards wide.”

Trustees approved the fencing and signage purchase at a cost of about $1,800. Township maintenance staff will install everything.

Additionally, DiMaggio says the township is putting out a request for proposals for a consultant that could offer future strategies to project the beach.

Any further measures will be brought before the township board for trustees to decide.
