It doesn’t look like you’re going to be forced to pay any fees to register paddle boards, canoes, and kayaks with the state. The Michigan House has voted overwhelmingly to oppose the so-called “kayak tax” floated by the Michigan State Waterways Commission. Representative Curt VanderWall of Ludington sponsored the resolution, which received bipartisan support.
“Basically we made a statement that said to the Waterways Commission that no way do we need to add another tax to people that want to use the great Michigan outdoors,” said the west Michigan Republican. Representative Kim LaSata of Berrien County said the resolution “sends a message to the Waterways Commission that we will not support a paddle watercraft tax of any kind.”
