Excitement in the Soo as the shipping season opens this Sunday at midnight. The executive director of the Sault Ste. Marie Convention & Visitor’s Bureau, Linda Hoath, will be there to give the first ship a special plaque.
“It is a big deal,” Hoath said. “I’m telling you, those freighters will be lined up here. They get going, and they all want to be that first freighter of the season. So, it’s a big deal for us.”
Hoath says people will line up to watch the ships go through the locks. She says it’s special this year as this is the 350th anniversary of Sault Ste. Marie, the oldest city in the Midwest.
