The new budget proposal from President Trump slashes funding for the Great Lakes in one respect, but it does include $1.5 million for the St. Joseph Harbor. Congressman Fred Upton tells us the 2019 budget has more money for Great Lakes navigation operations, and maintenance. In other words, dredging. That part of the budget is $108 million, a $2.5 million increase over last year. Upton says that’s “great news.” He adds the state’s harbors must be well-maintained to keep the economy running. Meanwhile, the president’s 2019 budget proposal slashes the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative from $300 to $30 million. When it comes to that, Upton says he’ll fight alongside the rest of Michigan’s delegation to maintain the funding, as he did last year.
