The candidates vying for the 6th district’s congressional seat have finally squared off in their only scheduled debate. They got together in Kalamazoo this week and made their case for voters. Incumbent Congressman Fred Upton said experience makes him the best choice.
“Republicans are going to keep the majority in the House, it’s important that we have somebody from this district that can work with the leadership to get things done,” Upton said.
Democratic challenger Paul Clements said Upton’s out of touch with the district’s economic realities
“If we want an economy that works for all of us, we don’t need to just fiddle about here and there,” Clements said. “We need substantial changes.”
Libertarian Lorence Wenke said the national debt should be a chief concern for the district’s representative.
“$60,000 for every citizen of the Sixth District,” Wenke said. “Congressman Upton has been in Washington for 30 years and has done a lot of good things, but the bill has been put on our credit card.”
One of the three is going to be chosen by voters next Tuesday to represent southwest Michigan in Washington.
