The Fort Custer Training Center near Battle Creek will be the site of a military missile interceptor if Michigan’s congressional delegation has anything to say about it. Congressman Fred Upton tells WSJM News they’ve sent a letter to the director of the Missile Defense Agency calling for the base to be chosen.
“We’re anticipating hearing a final decision probably at some point early next year, first or second quarter next year,” Upton said. “This would be a big boost for our economy in Michigan here, obviously. $3 billion in construction. Nothing to sneeze at.”
Upton says he’s confident Fort Custer is the best place for the interceptor. The letter sent this month was signed by almost every member of the state’s delegation. It says putting the interceptor site at Fort Custer would directly create 300 jobs.
