The Sierra Club of Michigan has weighed in on the safety of the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant in Van Buren County by filing an amicus brief with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission asking it to conduct a full physical inspection of parts of the facility’s pressure vessel. The club’s Mark Muhich says that the NRC’s Atomic Safety and Licensing Board is considering as much.

However, Muhich says that Palisades owner Entergy has instead requested that it do a calculation-based analysis, instead of a physical inspection, on the toughness of parts of the pressure vessel. Groups opposed had until this Friday to file their opinions. It’s the contention of the Sierra Club that the pressure vessel is too old and brittle to be safe. There’s no timetable for the NRC to make a final decision on whether it will be physically inspected.
