A piece of the World Trade Center taken from the wreckage of the 9/11 terrorist attacks will soon find its resting place in Benton Harbor. On Wednesday, dignitaries, including first responders from all over Southwest Michigan, gathered at the future site of the 9/11 Resiliency Plaza next to the public library to hold a groundbreaking. Benton Harbor Mayor James Hightower said that the city is a perfect place for the monument.

Project Resiliency and the Red Cross worked together to bring a steel beam that was once part of the trade center to the city, where it will be placed on display in an accessible and respectful manner, says Project Resiliency’s Peter Colovos.

On September eleventh of this year, a dedication will be held at the site. That’s when the steel beam will be unveiled. An endowment is being set up, using only private funds, to maintain the monument well into the future.
